OVERVIEW

The Spice Wall is a  contemporary destination dining feature that showcases pride in culinary arts, radiating the vibrance and diversity of the student body who the restaurant serves.

DESIGN

The design explores the sensory delight of cooking, the growth of natural forms, and the function of interactivity while capturing the excitement, energy, and intrigue of southern cooking. The result is a comfortable inviting atmosphere analogous to the style of dining.

An iterative design process examined attributes ranging from weight loading, to cost control of jar size and bracket density , to color and texture indexing of ingredients. The innovative quality of the fabricated components emerge secondary in the fulfillment of the design solution.

Hexagonal glass jars are filled with various ingredients used in the restaurant’s cuisine to create a unique and meaningful display. The Spice Wall is comprised of over 7,000 hexagonal glass jars nested in a custom fabricated structural system. The jars are filled with ingredients sampled from the restaurant’s regional culinary menu.

–“Over and over again, “that is so cool!” can be heard echoing through our newly designed location. The focus of this attention… the Spice Wall. The renderings and even the full-scale sample in no way prepared us for the dramatic impact of the completed design. Our expectations have been exceeded with the completion of the Spice Wall! The edgy, fearlessness of this design has certainly made an impact upon all who enter this space. It took a great deal of vision and conviction to convince us to take this risk. It was worth it!”  –Chesley Roberts
